SYMMETRY STUDIO in JHANE BARNES DESIGNS
For her 1996 menswear collection, designer Jhane Barnes developed dozens of patterns using Symmetry Studio software developed by Timothy Binkley. Binkley first met Barnes at a multimedia presentation on fashion and mathematics that she gave in 1994.
“I was really inspired by her,” says Binkley, a philosopher, mathematician, programmer, and artist. “ln the beginning, Jhane saw the computer as a shortcut. But as she got into it, she started actually designing in a new way.”
With Binkley’s program, Barnes runs any pattern through repeats using the 26 types of symmetry known to exist in the universe.
